START THE NEW YEAR “WRITE!”

By now, many have already given up on their New Year’s resolutions. I believe part of the reason is that they try to “fix” too many things at once. I know from experience. Life gets in the way of making lasting changes.

But I found one way to at least start… one change at a time! Here’s what I suggest:

Make a list of what you would like to accomplish/change during the new year.

Prioritize the list; I put writing first. Then chose to work on the one that is most important to you. Give the changes a month to develop into new habits.

For me, this means making changes to how and when I write. I struggle with time management when it comes to writing. There are so many other things to do! But since I am serious about writing, I focus on setting aside the chosen amount of time daily and make sure I avoid as many appointments or commitments as I can that interfere with that schedule.

This works for other goals as well. One month: start on day one to make the incremental changes that will help you reach your writing goals. Focus on sticking with the plan you have outlined. After January, slowly introduce the second priority on your list but don’t let it get in the way of your writing. Integrate it into the new schedule, ease into it and don’t be put off when it doesn’t always work out the way you intended.

You have 12 months! Imagine what you can change/accomplish! Good luck in the new year.
